Hey guys. I started to read Gardens of the Moon the other day, but I just can't seem to get into it. I did do research before and saw that it was a steep learning curve, which I'm fine with, but I just can't get into the book.
I'm ~150 pages into it right now and could not care less about any of the characters or cities, etc. I dunno. I guess coming off of The Kingkiller Chronicles, GoT, etc., I'm more used to a character driven story where you're actually made to like the characters (even if they're dicks).
I do like the grand scale and everything, but Erikson does an awful job easing you into the story/world (it's probably on purpose, but to me, it comes off as bad writing (not that I'm in any position to judge his writing ability, it just irks me)). Also I like having characters to root for. And he gives me none.

So the question is, should I keep reading? Should I just grind through a couple more hundred pages and it'll get better, or is the series just not for me?

Thanks!

Continue IMO.

I found the first book & parts of the second a bit of a grind.

Then I was completely hooked in the 3rd.

I also read somewhere that he sat on Gardens for a few years before he got a publisher contract, then started on the rest of the books, so his writing is noticibly better after the first.

I love the series, I mean it's not like the Kingkiller chronicle where you get a pretty deep connection with Kvothe right from the start (the synopsis actually for me) but he builds it up, through the books etc, you'll see connections in the third book about some things in the first, or the 8th etc.

I haven't read last one coz I'm saving it for when I'm really bored, but my favourite so far is probably the Third one, Memories of Ice (I think that's the one) where Ganoes Paran becomes awesome

I've actually heard that his writing gets better. I may try to finish the 1st one and see how I like it though.

Hah. I have no problem putting down a book if it doesn't grab me. I was planning on reading 10-15 books this summer, but Gardens of the Moon is really slowing me down mainly because I don't care enough about the characters and world to keep reading it.

Thanks for the input. I'll try to work through it, I suppose, and read some other smaller books on the side.

Thanks for all the advice!

First one is actually pretty slow,, more of an introduction to the Malazan world, after that you get all the schemes and intrigues and power plays. I really love how mortals and compete with Gods and such.

Definitely Keep Going. They Pick Up After The First One For Sure. I Actually Need To Finish The Series As Well, But Had To Stop When My Schedule Picked up. Looking Forward To Finishing it.
