i'm kinda interested in getting a couple good contemporary science fiction books under my belt, but i dont follow literary news very much at all...

anyways, anyone know any books you'd recommend? doesnt have to be the cliche scifi either, any scientific field is acceptable.

bonus if it involves time travel or parallel dimensions...because i find that particular topic lacking and would like to learn more!

Try Slaughterhouse 5!
Not contemporary, and not strictly sci-fi either, but it's a great read and has time travel and other dimensions.

idk if i have the time for a series, and from the reviews + description, i dont think i'll enjoy it very much at all. not to judge a book on its cover, but damn, this one is terrible.

i've been meaning to read this, and i've read some of vonnegut's other books and like his style; it was on the list beforehand.

although im not interested in the era or topic, i will check it out and see!

thanks guys! btw, i read most of Forever by Pete Hamill and thought it was pretty bad, idk if anyone's tried it.
the premise is that some guy is immortal but can only live in NYC and until he avenges a death; had a great opportunity to explore the history of the city, develop an intriguing character psychologically and emotionally, plus have that extra oomph of tying in the character into the very fabric of history (something like forrest gump). instead what i got was a lot of cussing, cliches, and little to no historical reverence.

if you managed to read all that, take the opposite of what i said and if you happen to know a book similar to it, give now ;)

thanks.

edit:
is it me, or do all time traveling books kinda suck? i havent read very many at all, but reviews from ones that sound good, are usually bad...its always "good premise, bad execution."

honestly, i really dont like judging based on covers, but sometimes a cover will tell you everything you need to know about a book, especially hardcore genre-specifics like fantasy or scifi.

i'm trying to find The Long Earth in my local library, or resort to buying it, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Long_Earth
sounds very interesting, but again, it could easily be one of those "good premise, poor execution," stories.
