Should I read the Hobbit books before starting with the Trilogy? Or the Trilogy then the Hobbit?

The Hobbit (only one book) => The Trilogy => The Silmarillion

I read the hobbit first, which in the linear story makes sense, though it's not necessary. The silmarrilion is a more believable bible. Interesting to read, but leaves you with a wtf did I just spend my time on feeling.
