I sit here alone, watching life go by
Doing what I need to, yet feeling none of it
If only there was someone to share life's joys
A being with whom I could simply relax with

Oh, to be able to talk and be heard
And not worry about being judged or abandoned
Someone who would understand my fears
And not one day leave me stranded

But oh, where to look to find this friend
The search so far is quite unyielding
Yet in my heart, I know they are there
Their unknown blessing not yet wielding

Alas! A stoke of genius comes to me
Enlightening me as to where they might be
And oh, how I rush to set them free
So that they might share their life with me

And as I arrive I straighten my hair
Hoping beyond hope they are not repelled by my sweat
But imagine my shock when I round the corner
And all I find is a man scratching his pet

Then it all falls into place
The man looks up and smiles
He unwinds the leash from his hand
Seeming to notice I had run for miles

He hands me the leash for the dog
Nodding at me before turning around
And before I can utter a word he is gone
Leaving me with this big black hound

Yet on the way home I came to find
He was definitely worth the wait
Because he would listen and love me always
And he soon became my best mate
