they are better than the movies, since they give u way more details. U might wanna read "the hobbit" also and maybe "silmarillion", which are from the same author. A different series in the fantasy genre with great popularity is "the wheel of time" from robert jordan u might wanna try that also.

1. hobbit is beginning of LOTR story
2. books are far more better than movie (actually movie was kind of disappointing to me with it's story, effect are good tho)
3. more than half scenes from books are not in the movie (in Fellowship of the Ring where Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin travel to Bree...in movie it's 5 minutes, in book it's ~90 pages)
4. in the end of Return of the King, movie ends after ring was thrown in Mount Doom and after Aragorn is king again....in book, they go back to Shire and meet Saruman who is spreading terror through whole Shire.... Hobbiton and other villages are in fire etc. and they have to finish him off too
5. could keep till tomorrow ^^

The Hobbit is a very quick book to read and quite enjoyable.

LotR harks back to the romantic era. There's a lot of descriptions of the countryside and whatnot. In that regard, it's well-written, but it catches a lot of people off guard who are expecting 24/7 non-stop action.

The Similarion is written in the same fashion as the Old Testament. I couldn't get into it, and I would recommend it for die-hard Tolkien fans only, or at least hold off until you've read LotR before you give a go at it.

that is more in the beginning of the book, after a while the story picks up, and it gets more enjoyable, I have to agree that some parts are boring...
