In that case, you could try something by Viktor Pelevin. He's a Russian author who writes sort of in the vein of Joseph Heller (Ctach 22). I like his novel Omon Ra, which is a black comedy about the Soviet space program. It's very good and very funny. And he did win some Russian literary award at one time. If it's got to be an American/British author, Ken Kesey wrote "Sailor Song." It's a post-apocalyptic type book, too. It's not as good as "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," but it was a decent read.
By the way, if you like sci-fi, you should read A Canticle for Liebowitz some time anyway. It's a great book.
