I read half of it like 4 years ago and thought it was amazing.

All i can remember/give is
-everyone carries orange magic crystals that give off heat/light
-different types of shadows follow people around and come to life/ have minds of there own and can hurt people
-boys crystal almost runs out so he has to climb the tower to get a new one and almost dies
-freezeing outside of the castle they are in but he goes out and finds a little girlfriend who can survive because of her breathing or something like that
