I've been working on a series of books for a while now (couple of years). Here is the introduction to my first. I don't really show my work to people, so I'm interested to see what people think of it - I expect the usual spam ^_^ But would appreciate some opinions. Thanks.

Introduction

Two weeks before Dex gazed into the fuzzy window that led to another
world, its disorienting folds of colour seemingly there one moment and gone
the next, he would have said it was impossible to travel among the stars with
nothing but a mere thought; it was something that happened in the movies,
not real life. And no matter how many people fantasised over waking up one
day with a magical gift it would never, and could never, happen.

Having said that, he’d also believed hearing voices meant you were crazy,
that if you were hearing voices then it was a clear sign that something up in
the old Think-Tank had come loose. Watch out! Another lunatic for the nut
house coming through!

That was what he had thought.

And perhaps, somewhere deep inside the man who stood ready to travel the
cosmos, there was a part of him - a very small part, for his eyes had seen much
in the last two weeks - that still believed those thoughts. Jesus Christ he wanted
to believe them, if only to get away from the reality of what he had done. The
screams clung to him like a wild beast, a tiger that had him and wasn’t about to
let go; no sir, not for at least another hundred years, by which time you will be
long dead. Dex doubted those claws would ever retract, even in death. It was
for that reason he wouldn’t mind being insane, he would count himself a very
lucky man if he was to suddenly come to his senses and find himself in the Priory,
his arms tight to his chest in a straight jacket as he bounced off the walls. It
certainly wouldn’t be the first time he’d awoken to such a situation.

To give you the full picture we need to go back two weeks, a short time in the
span of a human life, a mere blink of an eye to the universe. Yet as Albert
Einstein said, everything is relative. Certainly that was the case for Dex, who
felt the last two weeks were more like two decades. There were stages when
time DID seem to be going faster, yet it was still slow, like watching a man try to
run under water. And as your thoughts drift back into that time and you imagine
all the things you could have done, should have done, it no longer seems like two
decades, but two centuries instead.

And so, we will start at the beginning, or at least as close to the beginning that
would be interesting. For this is the story of Dex Andory, the man who – although
he didn’t know it, even as he stood looking at the portal to another world, the
anguished screams at his back – would one day cause such destruction that
eventually he would tear open the very fabric of existence. A man who was once
classed as “mentally unstable” by a professional doctor and fancied himself as an
artist (which he actually was, and rather good too) of fair talent. That he had once
been mad wasn’t a question that needed debating, Dex would have admitted it
himself, had done on many occasions, and would continue to.

I can see you sitting there, shaking your heads and saying “what does he know?
He’s only the bloody writer! Jeez!” and that’s the truth. Yet listen closely while I tell you this.

There is power in madness, magic too.

Ok that's just the short introduction, I don't wont to put anyone to sleep :D

Smacks of tryhardism and commonplace.

I do applaud you for your determination to write books and stories, but this introduction is unremarkable in my opinion.
