What order should I read the books in. I have the first two in The Dark Elf trilogy. Should I wait to read them and get others before or...?

they are separated mostly into tri's and quads, reading any of the trilogies or quadrilogies is fine

this list has dates

the first to read then would be Homeland, because it takes place in the earliest DR in the overall series

Transitions you certainly want to save until later, since it has portions taking place 100 years later, and obviously not all the characters are as long-lived as Drizzt

Ok so all the trilogies and tetralogies are self-contained? Or do they spill over in a significant way? Like if I read one trilogy and ignored another then would I be lost if I read another trilogy?

no, but there are time line tie-ins, one trilogy may end in a certain area, the next picks up in that area after a certain amount of time has passed and so forth

release order is not chronological order however, much like any big series, he went back and filled in certain times with books later on, and theres alot of backstory that is kinda nice to read first, although not totally necessary
