I am reading The Wheel of Time series right now and I think they are great and are into what you seem to be looking for.

The Wheel of Time is notable for its length, its detailed imaginary world, its well-developed magic system and a large cast of characters. The eighth through twelfth books each reached number one on the New York Times Best Seller list. As of August 12, 2008 the series has sold over 44 million copies worldwide[4] and has spawned a computer game, roleplaying game and a soundtrack album. The television and film rights to the series have been optioned several times, most recently by Universal Studios.

This serie is amazing imo, you might also like:

The Forgotten Realms by R.A Salvatore
Riftwar cycle by Raymond E. Feist
Eragon by Christopher Paolini
Keeper of the Swords serie by Nick Perumov (reading this atm, really fantastic writing imo)
Most books from David Eddings
Drenai series by David Gemmell (one of my absolute favourites)

All the books are Medieval settings with touches of magic and perhaps some romance ;]

Have fun reading.

The Bartimaeus Trilogy is my favorite book series. I also enjoyed the Persey Jackson series, although that's about gods/goddesses.

I enjoyed reading Chronicles of the Necromancer by Gail Z. Martin, just finished part 4.

The death gate cycle is also quite a good read.
