Tried to read LOTR before the first movie came out. I was in like 9th grade. Couldn't do it. After a couple years in college though I tried it again and loved it. Just have to take your time, and not mind the descriptiveness of book one. I will say that the third movie didn't make it seem near as bad as it was in the book when they were in Mordor.
