Bertrand Russel wrote The History of Western Philosophy which basically covers all the major philosophers up to the 1940's, I think it is. You can probably thumb through that until you find a philosopher or branch of philosophy you like, at which point you can read into it.

It was the first philosophy book I bought. They typically have a copy at Borders for like 5 bucks, and it is hardcover.

Read Plato's Five Dialogues. It contains some of the best introductory material to philosophy ever. If you do, I recommend you pay close attention to the arguments given in the Meno. It's a pretty crucial dialogue and covers a lot of the basic definitions given in philosophy, in particular the definition of knowledge as a "justified true belief."

Alain De Botton's "The Consolations of Philosophy" Hmm maybe not for the male audience per say, Quite the excietment though.

OH SHI~ how could I forget, William Lane Craig - A Reasonable Faith was probably the only philosophy book that I adored back in school.

but honestly go with Kamahs rec first He has truly great tastes in books, Mine might be a bit much for a novice reader.
