Not really what you are looking for, but the Dark Tower series by Stephen King takes place in a post nuclear type setting, but involves some time travel to the modern world also.

the hatchet if youve never read it isnt bad gary paulson has lot of decent books just not hard/long reads

the Genesis of shannara trilogy (prequals to the Sword of Shannara series) are about post apocalyptic america, set mostly in seattle/oregon
