It depends on what you like...

I've never finished it myself, though I've actually just started reading it again.
Do you already have a copy? You might want to browse through different editions to see which is most reader-friendly to you.
For example, I have a verse translation, which is very pretty, but it can be challenging in parts.

It's definitely a classic, and referenced all over the place, so, really I'd be amiss not to recommend it.
But... it might be slow-going.

So, really....

It depends on what you like. ;)

Yea I've only read some of it and its quite a difficult read. Certainly do not try to rush through the book, take lots of time to read it and truly understand it.

make sure to read a version with a significant amount of footnotes. no matter how bright you are, it is impossible to pick up on all of milton's references and metaphors as he obviously wrote in a very different time period. i feel it is best to be studied in a classroom setting, although one can undoubtedly appreciate it alone.

A huge, mist-shrouded form lurks ahead, and Dante approaches it. It is the three-headed giant Lucifer, plunged waist-deep into the ice. His body pierces the center of the Earth, where he fell when God hurled him down from Heaven. Each of Lucifer's mouths chews one of history's three greatest sinners: Judas, the betrayer of Christ, and Cassius and Brutus, the betrayers of Julius Caesar. Virgil leads Dante on a climb down Lucifer's massive form, holding on to his frozen tufts of hair. Eventually, the poets reach the Lethe, the river of forgetfulness, and travel from there out of Hell and back onto Earth. They emerge from Hell on Easter morning, just before sunrise.

I have not read it before, from beginning to end. I've read large exerts from it, though, and I have to say it's very dry. For a novel based around a man going through different stages of Hell, I found it incredibly boring.
