Pretty good series imo, but judge for yourself.

Title: Wheel of Time

Author: Robert Jordan - Deceased, he died last year, but another author took over. Brandon Sanderson I believe, could be wrong though.

Try The High Rhulain. As long as you don't become attatched to the characters who die, you won't get depressed.
