I read this short story in highschool in literature class and I can't remember the name of it, this is all I can remember:

I think a group of people were kicked out of their town, and there was 1 guy in particular who was like the quiet one, and I think he gambled alot too. At the end, he commits suicide and carved something into a tree I think.

I know it isn't much detail, but hopefully someone knows what I'm talking about.

I know what you are talking about, but can't remember name. The guy sticks a card onto a tree at the end and everybody dies in the cold or something.

That part sounds familiar too.
