Vouch classic..
This book is great because it deals with relevant issues like growing up even though it was written decades ago.

Great book. Dreaded having to read it at first but enjoyed it in the end.

since i didn't read the book, i can't technically say that it was good or bad but...
i'm really tired of some of the choices schools are making for kids to read.
this, in my opinion, is why many kids end up hating to read.
all we read throughout my highschool years were books about racism.
yes, i understand that we need to know about it and how bad it was so that it doesn't happen again, but holy shit you don't need to load books upon books of racism on me...
i ended up watching the movie in class, and i didn't like the story.
i tried reading the adventures of huckleberry finn... same thing...(plus i couldn't stand the dialect)
i wish they'd just let kids read what they want to read!

While I agree with you to some extent, in my experience, kids these days don't want to read anyway. Like you and TKAM, they watched the movie, passed judgement, and will now not read the book. The movie was decent but the book was phenomenal. The generation that's currently in school is growing up with far too easy-access mass media. They watch far too much TV and read far too little.

When I was growing up, my parents forced me to read (and not just about racism) until I was well in to middle school. They bought me books constantly and would bug me until I sat down and discussed the latest novel with them. What's frightening is that I'm starting to think that it's really the parents that are lacking here. The kids are still willing to read, but it's the parents that never encourage it. Wait until the kid is old enough, it's pointless. They no longer want to read and basically become a lost cause.

I get strange looks from my co-workers all the time when I remind them that I've never had cable TV and I never will. They don't understand what I do with my time. I remind them that I go out and photograph the city, cook wonderful dinners with my girlfriend, gaze at the stars on cool, cloudless nights and listen to a whole lot of music. When I'm bored on the weekends, I play Go with my roommates and drive around the woods. I read books and write poetry. I have all kinds of crazy sex.

No wonder I'm happier than my co-workers - I don't watch TV.

classics are classics for a reason. i had similar feelings, but u may feel differently if u become an english major.

such texts are ubiquitous high school fodder because they are coming of age stories
the racial criticism is self contained and easy to parse as a introductory lesson in analysis

i used to hate slave literature..
u really need to activate your capacity for empathy before they are anything resembling interesting, thoughtful, emotional
took me til now, 22 yrs old to realize it myself

Unlike many people my age ( I am 19 now) I absolutely love to read, and I have loved to read since I first began reading at around age 4 or 5. Nothing beats wrapping up in a book for hours, forgetting all your troubles. Sadly not too many people can appreciate that, many would rather cuddle up with the "idiot box" than read something that could in all actuality change their lives. I mean I certainly love to watch TV myself, but the clear winner overall is a good book.

My ranting aside To Kill a Mockingbird is another great classic that became a great film and much of the general public forgot it was a book (much like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest). Perhaps one day things can get back to the basics, and people will finally start to read again. Lord knows most people's vocabulary could rally use some help.
