I woke up scared.
Worse then that I was terrified. My heart was pounding, my breath came in gasps, and my body was taut. It was like a nightmare, except that waking brought no sense of relief. I felt that something dreadful had happened, but I did not know what it was.
I opened my eyes. A faint light from another room dimly illuminated my surroundings, and made out vague shapes, familiar but sinister. Somewhere nearby, water ran in a cistern.
I tried to calm my self. I started breathing calmly. I was laying on a hard floor, I hurt all over, and I had some type of hang over with a dry mouth and nausea.
The room I was in was dark, and smelt like urine. I sat up and heard my back pop. I figured I must of bit laying down for a while. I staggered to me feet. I walked to the open doorway. I walked like a drunk, finding it difficult to put one foot in front of the other. As I came to the doorway I slid my hand up the side of the wall looking for a light switch. I flipped the switch.
The florescent lights burned my eyes. I squinted my eyes shut instantly. A few moments passed and my eyes focused. I was in a public toilet. There was a mirror above a sink opposite of the doorway. I made my way too it. I looked in the mirror. A musky, dirty looking man starred back at me.
I am a bum? I thought
I looked around. I was alone in this public toilet. I turned around and looked out the door. I decided to walk out, I needed air. I peeked out the door to see where exactly I was. It looked like a subway station. I walked out and into the subway. I walked to the “EXIT” sign on the far left. There was a big door that looked heavy and rusted out. As I pushed it open it made a disgusting noise. I slipped threw and into the light.
The sun was at midday. I noticed skyscrapers in blocking out most of the sunshine. The streets were busy with traffic. People crowded the streets. I asked a passerby where I was.
“Excuse me sir, but where em I?”
“I don’t have any money for you” said the man without even making eye contact. He continued to just walk by me.
A old lady sitting on a bench just off to the right of me said
“Well sonny, your in Washington.”
I didn’t reply. I just stood there motionless.
I didn’t let the heavy door close behind me, I ran back inside. I returned the restroom where I awoke to this nightmare. I walked up to the sink. After turning on the water and splashing some on my face. I studied my self in the mirror for a moment.
Who am I?
What am I?
Why am I here?
