I was interested in the Curse of king Zvonimir (the Croatian king in middle ages).
I have red the whole story and it goes something like this:
King Zvonimir became king after our first king Tomislav. Tomislav was the first croatian king and he declared the kingdom of Croatia. But Zvonimir as the second king had to deal with political difficultys. He had to make the world accept the Croatia as uniqe kingdom. At that time the only possible way to do that was to make the pope accept the kingdom.
So the pope offered a deal to Zvonimir. He will accept the kingdom as long as Zvonimir promises to do 1 thing for pope without question. And Zvonimir accepted.
The years of Zvonimir kingship was known as years of peace and prosperty for Croatia.
In 1089 pope sent a letter to Zvonimir, to gather his best knights and go to the first crussader war to free the place of birth of our god (Jerusalem). And so he did. He sent a messenger throughout the kingdom to gather knights to come on the feild known as the Feild of 5 Churches ( today known as the Kosovos feild...not the state of kososvo, the village in croatia nameg kosovo). There he made a voteing in the nearby town of Knin (back then it was royal town). When he red the pope's latter, the knights went furious! Actual words of the angry kinghts : "Who are you to take us from our wifes and children!? To go fight and die for the land that's not mine or yours?" They threw him out of his castle (castle still exsists) on the feild and started hidding him with rocks (back then, worst imagionable death). While he was struglein in pain and slow death, he cryed out: "You infidels, rotten people!! As God as my wittnes, may u never have a king of your own blood again!!"
And so the good and peacefull king ended his life. Throwing a course on his own ppl.
Why it is legend:
Crussader wars started in 1092, not in 1089
He was not the last king-croat
Why it is interesting:
Croatia was known to participate in Crussader wars.
There was some changes in chalendar by the pope in that time
After his death croatia as kingdom started to fall... Turkish empire, Austro-Ugar Monarchy, Itally... and so on...
And if you take a closer look... after him, other kings were croats, but only in part...
I hope this is the right forum to post this stuff...and if you have any legends of your own... feel free to post it here... i'm all into that stuff
