Sparhawk from the Eddings series Ellenium: Sparhawk is a knight who is battle-hardened and eventually is given tasks beyond belief (hello any fantasy novel eh?) He finds a magic talisman that he is able to us (and conveniently has been meant for only him to wield it). Said talisman is able to give him the power to even battle evil gods. The writing that David and Leigh Eddings use to surround Sparhawk make me absolutely vote for this as the best overall character.
