Tor Books announced today that novelist Brandon Sanderson has been chosen to finish writing the final novel in Robert Jordan's bestselling Wheel of Time fantasy series. Jordan--described by some as Tolkien's heir--died Sept. 16 from a rare blood disease. The new novel, A Memory of Light, will be the 12th and final book in the fantasy series which has sold more than 14 million copies in North America and more than 30 million copies worldwide. The last four books in the series were all #1 New York Times bestsellers.

Harriet Popham Rigney, Jordan's widow and editor, chose Sanderson to complete A Memory of Light--which Jordan worked on almost daily for the last few months of his life--and will edit it. Rigney said some scenes from the book were completed by Jordan before his death, and some exist in draft form. "He left copious notes and hours of audio recordings," she said. He also revealed details about the end of the series to close members of his family.

Sanderson, who acknowledged Jordan as an inspiration to him as a writer, has established a loyal fan base as the author of three fantasy novels: Elantris, Mistborn and The Well of Ascension (Tor), as well as a YA novel, Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians (Scholastic Press). Sanderson said, "I'm both extremely excited and daunted by this opportunity. There is only one man who could have done this book the way it deserved to be written, and we lost him in September. However, I promise to do my very best to remain true to Mr. Jordan's vision and produce the book we have all been waiting to read."

I've personally never read any of the guys stuff but from what I've read he's got a very similar writting style to Jordan.

I haven't read the guy, but interesting nonetheless. You knew they weren't gonna get A-list genre talent, those guys all have their own things going on. But I haven't heard anything bad about the guy (though I'm about to check my regular fantasy literature forum, so that might change), so who knows. I'll read it to finish the series...and I think it might be a bit entertaining to pick out the passages that are RJ's and those that are not. See if a decade+ of reading the fucker has gotten me attuned to his writing style.

That said...I know we always overexxagerate the accomplishments and impact of the dead, but 'Tolkien's heir' is laying it on a bit thick. Someone needs to lay off the hyperbole.

Hmmm...as I suspected, my regular board has a thread already...and Sanderson himself has posted in it. Interesting stuff.

He's promised to answer who killed Asmodean, good stuff.

I can't even remember what happened to Asmoden, been that long since I read the series.
Guess I'll need a re-read in 2009 before the book is released.

And yeah "tolkiens heir" is a bit stupid, but it's a press release by Tor books, and press releases always need a dose of BS.

Yea I can't wait to see if I can see who's writing is who's either.

I just really hope he can live up to the writing.

I really wish that Asmodean wasn't killed. I actually liked that guy a lot, even tho he was one of the Forsaken. sad.gif

I liked him to.. A big coward in his way though, but.. I have a hunch that it was Greandal who killed him, but don't know if this is correct ^^ Jordan said that it should be possible to figure out who did it, with the clues he has allready written in the published books
