Legacy Of Blood
Act 1: The Newcomer & The Temptress
Temas was now a simple farmer, who sought refuge in the company of the rogues who had been forced to abandon the monastery they guarded due to an assault by the demonic temptress Andariel and her infernal horde of monsters of unspeakable horror. He now had to live with his deadly mistake, and the nightmares that followed would forever haunt him.
Temas was once a member of the holy order of paladins who served the church of Zakarum. His commander, Captain Dorius, ordered him to lead a party of 13 other paladins to the town of Tristram to try and help solve the growing problems in the small town.
“I haven’t a good feeling about this mission, Dorius.” stated Temas.
“Do not worry Temas, for you and your fellow paladins are warriors of the light, and therefore will be protected by the Arch-Angel Tyreal.”
Temas bowed and went about preparing his men and horses for the trek.
Dorius could not have been more wrong, for not even Tyreal, the essence of Justice, could protect them from the horrors that lurked just beneath the town’s labyrinth…
Temas and his paladins entered Tristram five days later, and were greeted by townsfolk now doubt joyous at their arrival to help. The paladins set about repairing their weapons and armors as they had been damaged while fighting some minor bandits and thieves on their way to Tristram. Tobias, Temas’ second in command, was the last to sharpen his sword. While Tobias had his sword sharpened the other paladins had a look at the smithy’s modest wares. Griswold, the smith, said once he finished sharpening the weapon, “You men be careful, for a week ago a search party was sent to find the missing prince Albrecht, only one man returned and he, was barely alive.” That set everyone on edge…everyone except Tobias.
Tobias, always had delighted in combat, but he was no mere fool, for without his weapon he was nothing and therefore had put much faith in his blade, as it had protected him through many a mission where other weapons would simply have failed. Many believed his weapon to be imbued with magical power or even the mystical, “runes,” that some people say if placed in the right order could make a weapon so powerful that it could even slay an angel…
However, any sane person would never believe such a weapon possible to forge, even magically. But whatever the reason for the weapons power Tobias rightfully named it, “The Law Bringer.”
The next day the men set out for the labyrinth. Everyone was still nervous about what Griswold had said the other day. Only when they reached the entrance did their fears become reality. Temas saw it first. The body of a man nearly dead, he was the only other survivor of the search party other than the man Griswold mentioned, who also fled town after he was healed. Temas wanted to end the man’s life so he would no longer be in such misery, but the man begged Temas to listen to him.
Temas leaned closer to better hear the man’s voice.
“Listen…young…paladin,” rasped the dying man, “there’s a…a monster lurking beneath the Cathedral, one of unimaginable brutality and horror.”
“They…they called him the butcher, we didn’t stand a chance! First he…he only wounded them, then…then, oh god it was pure terror! Their screams, they were so unholy that I couldn’t even imagine what he did to them, I only had one chance to see the inside of his chamber, but I swear it was not a sight meant for mortal eyes…he flayed his victims and pierced their skinned corpses onto wooden spikes! Please holy ones slay this beast so our souls may finally rest in peace…”
“Rest easy now my brother,” a teary-eyed Temas said. “We shall avenge your sacrifices.” And with that the young townsman died. Everyone looked at each other and agreed that they should slay this demon before it killed any more innocents. Gripping their long swords, they entered the labyrinth, most would never see the light of day again…
