Rofl? That's a good reason to think a book is dumb.

You think the book is amazing all the while skipping the major parts of the book.
It's a complex moral statement, about how important color and emotions are to the world.
Bad execution, good idea.
The ending completely ruins the book, which is a 4 out of 5 until that moment.

I wholeheartedly disagree with this review. First of all, I have no idea what you're talking about in your first sentence; second, you seem to be missing the point of it. "The importance of color and emotion" isn't really the major theme here, it's a statement about utopias and how it is impossible for such a place to exist. It's similar to Brave New World and 1984 in many ways, if you've read either of them. It could be a statement about communism. The ending is a pretty good one, imo: although unclear, it allows for the reader to think about it on their own.

Felt too "hollywood" for me.
Anyway, the o/p missed the meaning of the book more than I did. It isn't Shared Birthdays that's important.
I think the book would have been served better if he would have been like The Giver, instead of running away.
