tolkien is not the best but he seems to have the best vote ( maybe because of the 3 films )

WoT

some of the most badass characters such as Lan and Matt

Mat and Lan are badarse? Try reading the Malazan Book of the Fallen series, it'll change your perspective on things like that, Silchas Ruin, Anomander Rake, Apsalar, Kalam, Quick ben they're all absolute fucking badarses.

I find Terry Pratched to be vickedly funny, but my vote have to go to Rober Jordan and his WoT.
You can't help fealing a relationship with the characters.. Me, I especially like Mat (like everybody else ^^ )
Also the plot, storyline, setting, the realness of the characters, it all adds to WoT and its author getting my vote .)
I think Tolkien got so many votes, not only because him being a great author, but also because of the films.

Thanks TheRaven, for putting this poll where it belongs in this forum.. Will definitely take some advice here as to what I should read next!

Also I did figure out the importance/meaning of the raven, as I continiued reading the WoT series (Probably you don't remember our talk last year, but^^)

I don't understand how Robert Jordan is getting so many votes.

Books 8-10 are as bad as books 1-3 are good.

And George Martin let us down with book 4 of fire and ice.

I think when you read them, you get frustrated because up to then, it has been a fast paced, action style book that has a "do or die" sense of feeling to it. In 8-10, the story drags. The entire book covers a couple months, whereas others would cover mounds of events and maybe a years full time.

Overall, the story is amazing, and the fact that the story drags in the later books doesn't stop it from being a one-of-a-kind, wonderful series.
