I have finally completed the 14 book epic ( so far.. havent bought orc King yet)
Garunteed to be the best books you could read. obviously since your playing D2 you enjoi Fighting, magic and everyone running around backstabbing.
The Dark Elves are the supreme race of magic and intgriege.
edit: heres a book list for those that havent read them yet and might be interested.
Ekhm, what can I say? No! I havent found Drizzt books interesting at all ( I've read one or two of those, borrowed from a friend). There was nothing for me outstanding among other fantasy books. Of course this is only my opinion and you have yours, but please dont tell me that I'll love something that isnt worth it. In fact, these Drizzt books dont seem to be ambitious at all. I dont like books with computer game alike heroes, trivial and filled almost only with pure action descriptions which dont leave place for too much imagination.
Best books I can read? It all depends on your taste, but if I have to choose good books I would rather read S.King and T.Pratchett for their great skill of storytelling, I.Assimov and P.K.Dick for their impressive (and often dark) visions of the future , G.Wells and J.R.R.Tolkien for huge imagination and big contribution in building sf and fantasy standard of writing. There are more authors which books I like, but these are writers which books I find not only interesting, but also in many cases being work of arts.
Dont get me wrong. I dont say that Drizzt books are bad and R.A.Salvatore isnt a good writer. I just dont find him a genious writer and put him among writers making massive amounts of books for masses.
