Chronicles of Narnia or Artemis Fowl's series.

Also by C.S. Lewis

* Out of the Silent Planet (1938)
* Perelandra (aka Voyage to Venus) (1943)
* That Hideous Strength (1946)

It's the space trilogy.

Song of Ice and Fire is a must read!
it's amazing

If you like it then you'd like the Malazan Book of the Fallen.

Not true, i'm reading the first book of that series and i can't seem to get into it. I loved GRRMs stuff but something about Steven Eriksons writing just doesn't capture my attention for very long. Maybe you could tell me if it gets better after the first book? At this point i can't see myself reading the several books after this one.

The first book is probably not as well written as the other ones, something you'll find with a lot of authors, you definitely see the huge improvement though.
The good thing with the series is you don't have to start with book 1. Books 1,2,5 all start on new storylines, with the other boks either continuing a storyline or merging two together.
If you can't get into book 1 i'd definitely suggest reading book 2 first (deadhouse gates) and then going back to reread book 1 before book 3.
The books are relatively slow paced though each one has a finished storyline entirely within each book.

I finished the book, and i must say it had a lot of potential. I have never read a fantasy type book that had actual gods mingling with characters, it was quite fascinating. Gods who played the humans as pawns for there own personal amusement. I must say this book had it's points to it, but i never had a feeling of climax threw the story, no WOW I NEVER WOULD OF SUSPECTED! Just hmm cool. It was like the story was just one straight line, with no ups and downs, I do not know if this will make sense but that is the only way to describe it, and no not formulaic.

Did you have the same thoughts as you finished it? I'm not sure if i will read the second, but if people say it is a better written, then i just might.

The unexpected moments arrive later in the series, i can see what you mean about the first book though, there aren't any real suprises thrown in.
I highly, highly suggest you read book 2, it's very much better than the first book, and there are more than a few twists and turns.

The Discworld series by Terry Pratchett FTW!

Terry Goodkind is also nice - first book of the Sword of Truth Series was best tho (imo)

Neil Gaiman also writes nice books - American Gods, Neverwhere, ... (haven't read the Sandman yet...)

A Clockwork Orange icon_pointr.gif Burgess

Brave New World icon_pointr.gif Huxley

Catcher in the Rye icon_pointr.gif Salinger

Classics for a reason!

if you have the stomach for it, i'd recommend Marquis De Sade's 'The 120 Days of Sodom'
