Dune by Frank Herbert

it's been made into a movie and it's sci-fi but it's pure gold

this is a definite must! :) the wheel of time series is very good and I personally love the "A Wizard in Rhyme" series by Christopher Stasheff. It begins with "Her Majesty's Wizard"
Love those kind of books.

A Song of Ice and Fire series-George RR Martin
^this so hard. Dont touch anything if you havent read that series yet. It blows everything else away, dead serious.

Another good series that reads terribly (just all over the place) but feels really satisfying is malazin book of the fallen. Several books in the series, and one or two are just flat out terrible, but when its good its really good.

My goodness I've read midnight tides of the malazan book of the fallen and it's Great! Tehol Beddict is a god in this

Ahh, anything by R A Salvatore.

This of course. Drizzt Do'Urden is an epic character. Start with http://www.multiverse.org/fora/showthread.php?t=4045 " * Homeland (1990)
* Exile (1990)
* Sojourn (1991)
* The Crystal Shard (1988)
* Streams of Silver (1989)
* The Halfling's Gem (1990)
* The Legacy (1992)
* Starless Night (1993)
* Siege of Darkness (1994)
* Passage to Dawn (1996)
* The Silent Blade (1998)
* The Spine of the World (1999)
* Servant of the Shard (2000)
* Sea of Swords (2001)
* The Thousand Orcs (2002)
* The Lone Drow (2003)
* The Two Swords (2004)" I started with crystal shard, but I'd read it all like this.
