Heart of Darkness is phenomenal. The Grapes of Wrath is boring; on the other hand, his Of Mice and Men is great. The Scarlet Letter is boring [and vastly overrated, Hawthorne's other work is much better].
On the Great Depression? Other than Steinbeck, how about Caldwell and Agee? There's quite a bunch...
