I like how everyone in this thread mentions classic authors like Hemingway, Dostojevskij and such, when every single thread (almost) in this forum is about shitty fantasy books and crime fiction. Something isn't right.

Oh and also: Javier Cercas. He's great for a modern writer

Lovecraft -- Really haven't read much yet, but I have read was great.
Christopher Paolini -- He wrote his first book, which was great, when he was 16. That alone is commendable.
John Steinbeck -- Again, haven't read much but the few I've read were good.
Orwell

It's been a while since I've read a book that I actually enjoyed, so I'm having trouble coming up with a list.

I'm about 90 pages into 1984, and it's looking good so far (might have to add Orwell)
