Because it's the best way to get knowledge and developpe your imagination which are the most important parts of the Intelligence. Everything you know right now comes from a book, what you learn in school, what your parents told you it all originated in a book because it's the only wya to share knowloedge without it being lost.

I don't understand how ppl can be entertained by books, like... my brother was telling me how he read some book and how he thought it was epic and the best book he has ever read.

I couldnt help but laugh at the poor guy, how can u be entertaind by sitting in ur room for like 5 hours a day for like 2 weeks, staring at some text, who would wanna spend their precious time doing somthing stupid like that?

And whats even more strange to me.. is the fact that ppl keep books and read them more then once? wtf? , whats the point of reading a book more then once, thats prolly the lamest thing ive ever heard.

some ppl are entertained so easily, they could prolly watch paint dry and be excited.

why would you laugh at him? is spending time on the computer playing games/on facebook or whatever any better? going to a pretty dead forum to express your hatred of books, making fun of readers via biased assumptions perhaps?
books are an excellent way to escape the real world and to just daze off into a fantasy, and it's the same thing as watching a movie in that sense; would you make fun of someone for watching movies?
except reading doesn't fry your brain and strain your eyes (unless you're an idiot), it increases your vocabulary, grammar, and overall intelligence
+everything everyone else has said thus far
i'd much rather crawl in my bed and read a good Stephen King novel than be on the computer playing games or whatever, although I admit I don't do that nearly often enough
w/e, I suggest you read a good book before bashing on them so much; I feel bad for you, not your brother.

Why do people watch TV? They can just get the same from the internet.
Why do people browse the internet? Why not just be entertained by video games?
Why do people play video games? They could just go out and hang out with friends.
Why do people have friends? Why not just stay inside, away from the light.
Why do people care? It only makes things harder.
Why do people live? Because you touch yourself at night.

Now seriously, people have their quirks. Books tell a story, stories can be entertaining. Don't tell me you've never been read any stories when you were like 5 years old. THOSE CAME FROM BOOKS.
As for not understanding... That's understandable, too. Like I can't understand why people can't believe it's not butter. Or why don't people understand quantum mechanics. It's so easy.

I enjoy the story and the concepts authors use, I want to be able to read faster, it generally helps my writing, it expands your knowledge of the world, etc.

There is this thing called imagination
You use it while reading books.

Its like a giant movie with all details in your head. And its a hell lot of entertaining. Better than most movies, not that i dont like movies, but most of them are crap.
