Depends on what you`re reading....if you read stupid entertainment books like LoTR or Harry potter that do not require any thinking above 3rd grade level , then sure... but if you`re reading philosophy like David Hume or Kant...it requires a lot of thinking and analyzing. So, you can read 1000 useless books like Harry potter and still remain stupid in a sense that they do not contain any ideas a 5yo wouldn`t understand, but you can read only one and learn a great deal from it.

I disagree with that...what makes you so erudite and lofty? I belive ANY reading is great exercise for the brain..not everyone needs Anne Rande or Steven Hawking to feel like they read somthing of substnace. Your a snob and I bet you dont even read those books unless they are required for some course.

owned and vouch.

any reading at all, is way better than no reading, even i sometimes come across words i do not know when im reading fantasy books, in fact i outright reject every single book that is is a classic, simply because; they bore me, and i dont need to read certain books to think of myself as smart, any person, who reads, is more likely smarter than people who dont read, it doesnt matter what you read, as long as you read.

Any reading is good, however if you read for instance, some kind of philosophy, it requires more thinking of you while your reading the book to understand some ideas, hence it takes more time to read and get all the ideas, as it would to understand, lets say a fantasy book. Dont get me wrong, I love fantasy, horror, suspense,etc.. but philosophy(not only) usually takes more time of you, since its kinda of a heavy reading.

If you read philosophy, and fail to understand what you are reading, have you then read anything at all?

You can read anything you want but if you don't get it then what's the point of wasting your time. I've read philosophy and I've read stupid Star Wars books for middleschoolers. Some books you read because they are interesting and some you just read because you enjoy it.
I take 1-2 weeks because I only read usually before bed and when I do it's usually 10-20 pages until I'm in a coma. My wife is usually pushing me and telling me to give it up or she just takes the book out of my hands.

A week if the book is shitty or I'm bored

I dont fail to understand philosophy, what I said is that its not so easy to understand, so what I do is slow the pace a little bit. You wont read philosophy in the same pace as you read harry potter.
