i think bilbo is talking about elvs + spiders there. its just an opinion

i havent read the books but in the movies; (so far)
saved em from the trolls (wasted time until gandalf came to the rescue, imo it counts cuz they would have died otherwise...)
saved em from the White Orc
saved em from the spiders
he got em out of the elves prison

It's been years, but in the troll scene I don't remember gandalf actually doing anything other then dramatically announcing the dawn of the sun as it rises. Could be wrong though, it's been ages, but I believe that's one of the times they are referring to.

Movie was great, but sadly never read the book
