I'd never actually tried listening to a book until this year, and wasn't really impressed.
I would never listen to a book before reading it, as it's much harder to follow along and actually process what's happening.
However, it is pretty nice to listen to books you've read before when doing other things, such as driving, walking, playing games (I started listening to books while playing CoD), etc. You already know what happens for the most part, so you don't need to focus too intently on what you're hearing.
I tried listening to Harry Potter because I always heard they were supposed to be good audio books (I've already read them), but I couldn't stand the guy's voice acting. For female characters, he tried to actually sound like a girl and it was just terrible.
I guess you have to find not only books you wouldn't mind listening to, but also books with decent voice actors.
Anyway, I prefer books, but audio books aren't too bad if you're just casually listening.
jim dale or steven fry?
audio books with different people reading (eg: one for narrator, one for men, one for girls, etc) are fantastic. here's an example:

the convenience trumps all though. being able to listen while i drive, walk, and jog is amazing.
the problem i have with physical books is the font is too small. and if you find the "large print" books, most of them are single spaced so it's not much easier to read.
ive started reading fanfic on the computer and i like being able to control the font/spacing.
