I was like you tbh.  I never enjoyed reading, especially for academic purposes.

It wasn't until a couple of years ago did I pick up a book for the first time to actually tried to read for enjoyment.  I got hooked.

Reading for enjoyment is entirely different than reading for academic purposes.  It's like playing a game or watching a movie but better.

You reading pace vastly improves the more you read, same with your vocabulary.  My advice would be to pick up a book genre you like which is well acclaimed and just read when your doing your business or something.  That's how I started.

What type of genres do you like?

When reading for enjoyment, do you ever forget what you read?
That's one of my fears of reading.
When I read too fast I feel that I'm not understanding/remembering what I'm reading.

To answer both of you,

I like anything that isn't politically-based.
I don't really like fantasy books like Harry Potter/Twilight

I'm thinking of reading a horror book or something.

Idk what kinda person you are but if you're not afraid to take pills, Aderrall and its subsidiaries helps concentration sometimes.
When I started out reading I hated it, but a friend got me to try Addies once, and I read the full 4 Harry Potter book that night. Comphrended and completed.

My middle school required everyone take a reading class and I learned that reading words out loud/mumbling them slows down the rate of reading.
But when I try to read without saying the words in my head/mumbling them, I don't remember the information

I was like that before I finally found my call into the "world" of books. I had read maybe fourty books throughout my short life when I watched the Lord of the Rings movies. After watching those I started reading the books (I had read The Hobbit a couple of times in the past) and I absolutely loved them.

I think it's all about finding out what you really like about books. Personally I love Tolkien's books because of his immense imagination and found it incredible how someone could build up such a vast legendarium. It inspired me to read more and more.

If you like the Horror genre in general, Stephen King is an obvious option.

Find out what you like about books! Seriously, I think that's the key for someone like you. It was for me. After finding out what you like about books, just jump in. There's nothing to be afraid about a book.

Edit: Just realized I might not have answered your topic question. I don't believe there's any "ways to enjoy reading". You just gotta "get into" the whole reading-thing, hence the "jump in". Gotta get used to read I guess.. then you will enjoy it.
