like cannonized literature.  high art.  joyce, woolf, austen, etc.  or is this just a place to talk about how awesome you think the dark tower/twilight/other garbage series is?

I think all I read was "I'm a pretentious douchebag who pretends to find value and insight in books to which I cannot relate, written by authors whose names I have memorized to seem intelligent to strangers."

"Real literature" doesn't mean it was written by a dead guy. It means it's well-written, evocative, and unique. There are plenty of examples of brilliant writing you can find written in the last 50 years, stop trying so hard, no one cares that you force yourself to read Shakespeare.

Cheers

I like a lot of literature, and am wondering how many people are actually capable of rating/reviewing a book. I ask this because it's quite easy to like the canonized books: a lot of people read them and have an opinion about them. James Joyce's books, for example, have already been thoroughly analyzed and commented upon. The same goes for Kafka's: the hard work has already been done. There is a lot more challenge in reading and forming an opinion on an new author.

On topic: I like Mark Z. Danielewski, and José Saramago the most ;)

russian authors are amazing (dostoyveskey, tolstoy) but a lot of stuff is actually completely overrated.

Lets take an example; the legend of the seeker is HORRIDLY written, but it's a good story (according to some, is topped reading fantasy years ago). Does that make the books "good litterature" or just popular?

I'd say Ayn Rand's books are masterpieces, but her writing skills wasn't the best, yet I'd consider it as good litterature because it got content.

Idc about main stream, i usually read to educate myself

just because a book isnt written by some harvard scholar doesnt make  it garbage, books are entertainment, just like any movie or music YOU might listen to or watch, Dark Tower was written by King when he was younger than you.

get off your high horse, nobody cares

hahahah. this guy always has a dildo up his ass.
makes me laugh.
