The books were pretty good, far better than the movie, but they are geared towards readers at about the Junior high school level. C.S. Lewis also has a trilogy out (which I can not remember the name of these three books but I beleive one is The Perils of Perilandria) which also merges theology and fantasy but is for more advanced readers. I liked that trilogy much better. For a christian writer he has/had more flexible and advanced views than just about any self-proclaimed "christian" I've ever met.
If you like his views on religion you might try The Screwtape Letters or Mere Christianity, both by Lewis.
The Screwtape Letters is a series of letters from a demon to his nephew, talking about how to lead men to their vices, etc. Mere Christianity is sort of a noncontroversial attempt at Chrisitan apolgetics.
On topic: I really liked The Chronicles of Narnia. They were some of my favorite books when I was little, and maybe that's part of why I liked the movie, nostalgia. But I know that's not all of it, I just thought it was a great film. Not too gory or actiony, so it's still suitable for little kids, though the part with the table could be a little scary, but it's also got enough adult elements to satisfy the older audience.
I hope they're planning to continue the series. A few of the books are a little heavy-handed in the Christian undertones, but I don't imagine the modern movie making machine would translate them instead of just ripping them out anyway. After all, look at what they're doing to the His Dark Materials movies.
Had to edit it to fix the tags, I'm too used to GFAQs>_>
