I'd recommend Raymond E. Feist's books, starting with Magician: Apprentice and then Magician: Master.

Hope you enjoy them, I've enjoyed all of his so far. Also a lot of other good books recommended above, too.

I would recommend you The Triology written by Polish writer (and also Nobel prize winner for literature in 1905) Henryk Sienkiewicz which comprised from:
1) With Fire and Sword
2) The Deluge
3) Fire in the Steppe
The story is set into medieval Poland and it follows a few characters through they struggle in the civil war after the cossak uprising (1), which was followed by Swedish invasion (2) and lastly a war with Ottoman empire(3).
This books are considered a historical novels, so you wont find any magic in it, but there is still a lot of heroes and action. I know i loved them since i got so immerged into the story i just couldnt put the books away until ive read them.

Incarnations of Immortality Series by Piers Anthony -best series i have ever read.

Incarnations of Immortality is the name of an eight-book fantasy series by Piers Anthony. The first seven books each focus on one of seven supernatural "offices" (Death, Time, Fate, War, Nature, Evil and Good) in a fictional reality and history parallel to ours, with the exception that society has advanced both magic and modern technology. The series covers the adventures and struggles of a group of humans, called "Incarnations", who hold these supernatural positions for a certain time.

On a Pale Horse (1983) -Death
Bearing an Hourglass (1984) -Time
With a Tangled Skein (1985) -Fate
Wielding a Red Sword (1986) -War
Being a Green Mother (1987) -Nature
For Love of Evil (1988) -Evil
And Eternity (1990) -Good
Under a Velvet Cloak (2007) -Night

Also the Shannara Series by Terry Brooks. icon_pointr.gif http://www.terrybrooks.net/novels.html the original shannara trilogy are the only I can vouch for.
