I'm currently taking what is one of my favorite history classes thus far. We've read 2 books so far: Kokoro by Natsume Soseki and The Woman in the Dunes by Kobo Abe. As for my two other history classes, someone already mentioned Umberto Eco which is very good, I recommend In the Name of the Rose. Lastly, not sure how into "war" memoirs you are, but I recently finished If I Die In A Combat Zone, Box Me Up And Ship Me Home by Tim O' Brien who has many other Vietnam memoirs. GL and HF.
Edit: The 3 history classes are Modern Japan, Medieval, and War and Peace in American History respectively.
Edit: I've read countless others that are history specific in my four years at this university, feel free to pm me if you're interested in more.
