East of Eden - Steinbeck is an amazing writer and East of Eden is one of my favorite books.. I'd recommend reading this over just about any book you could choose.
Catch-22 - my second pick, its just an amazing book that is so hard to explain in a few words.. just as all truly good books.
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn - pretty good book, at times it can get a bit boring but still good nontheless.
The Crucible - cmon Arthur Miller... need I say more?
Tale of Two Cities - good book but its one of those books you, at leas I didn't, like until the book is finished.

since ur list seems to be a lil bit biased toward anglo-american authors ... ill advocate faust ( if it is goethe ), and a book i do really like ( but not on ur list , i hope that doesnt disqualify my comment ...) karel capek *absolutum*

anything by shakespeare would be a great read-try to find a "modernized" translation if you have trouble with the original writing
