The Sun also Rises is the only novel by him that I've read. It was the one that made him famous for his style. I thought it was alright.
I've heard A Movable Feast by him is really good. I also enjoyed The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber.
Hemmingway was famously bipolar, and actually killed himself during a depressive episode. Because of it, his works are usually an odd mix of manic happiness and crushing hopelessness.
I was always under the impression he died of alcohol-related health problems. Unless you mean he gradually killed himself over decades by drinking too much.
