Probably Ken Follett

Fiction books, but in "real world" and well-researched settings, he painstakingly researches the times, cultures, customs, etc, when he writes a book

Kurt Vonnegut.

His satire and science fiction writing just does it for me.

Always a good choice, but I'll go a little more contemporary and say Neal Stephenson.

As for why, Anathem. nuff said :D

Bukowski.

Nobody writes as honest and dirty as he did.

Have you read anything by John or Dan Fante?

I'm not saying they're better but I've enjoyed their books almost as much as I enjoyed for example Ham On Rye
