I have to read two books by the same author for English. I imagine we'll have to end up drawing parallels and stuff between the two at the end. I'm thinking about doing these two... I want them to be interesting and relate-able. Would someone who's read them both reccomend them for this purpose?

I suggest 1984 and Animal Farm. IMHO those are his two best books. It's very easy to form parallels between these two books as both cover the errors and flaws within different government agencies. They both go over the continuous and never ending cycle of wanting to control the human populus through fear. The governments themselves will always change, but fear will be their main weapon. Hence 'the many different faces of fear'.

I know Homage to Catalonia is Orwell's personal experiece so their has to be a parallel between that and 1984. Someone does not wake up one day and decide to write something like 1984 and I think Homage to Catalonia may have opened up to him a new world.

Thats just my $.2, I hope things work out. Good luck.

Yeah, at first I wanted to do Animal Farm, but my English teacher said it would be too short/easy. I decided it might be more interesting to try and compare a work of fiction and non-fiction, and maybe even see from where he gets his famous utopian-style books and themes.

So far, though, I haven't found anyone who's actually read Homage to Catalonia. If anyone has, any commentary would be appreciated.

The reason no one has read Homage to Catalonia is because it's not one of his most popular books. He is most known for 1984 and Animal Farm.

From what I do know, Homage to Catalonia is his personal experience during the Spanish Civil War. I think he was part of an anti-communist party which was illegal during Stalin's regin. So he probably had to flee or face death. I also think he was shot through the neck which he sruvived, what a bad mother fucker! Seriously if being part of an anti-communist party and fleeing from Stalin AND getting shot through the neck is not inspiration enough to write about utopia then I don't know what the fuck is.

If you do Homage and 1984, one parallel is both Orwell and Winston were shot through the neck which COULD suggest that Winston Smith may represent Orwell if society was that of 1984...

Eh just thoughts I just realized. Good luck m8, your making me want to read Homage to Catalonia. And no, I'm not going to read it and tell how good it was. Find out for your self wurf.gif thumbsup.gif

I've developed a fetish for these emoticons/smily faces or w/e their called.

I was going to suggest 1984 and Brave New world because I think comparing two styles of different dystopian futures would make for an interesting mix.
I reread your post though and now notice they need to be from the same author, sorry >_<
