It's a lot easier (and less risky) to go out and get extension tubes. I bought a $12 extension tube set that doesn't have any electrical connection (so it's all manual). The set came with a 7mm, 14mm, and 28mm extension tube set, and they can all connect together. Really useful, cheap, and optically decent. Threading is good, etc... just look for one on Amazon that doesn't have complaints about threads breaking (cheaper metal construction).

I've tried the whole flipping the lens around thing & I think it's not worth it. You'll risk getting more dust than you normally would on your DSLR's mirror, and you're fumbling around with components that aren't attached.

I bought a reverse mount ring for an old 50mm canon I had to use on my nikon. Its neat and all but I don't use it much at all. I would much rather just save for a real macro lens

The article says that you need fully manual lens for it to work, which isnt true. At least with canons you can manually set the aperture by putting it on your camera, turning on the camera, setting aperture to what you want, hold that aperture closing button and take the lens off the camera at the same time. Trying to shoot close macro like this wide open will just result way way too small dof and ugly pics
