Is there any decent wide angle lens out there that is in a decent price bracket that meets these requirements:

1) Nikon compatible
2) Wide on crop, properly compatible with full frame in full frame mode
3) Not terribly soft, good with color rendition, etc
4) Built in focus motor

That's a normal range lens though :( It's a crop sensor only lens.

It's wide - normal.

How wide do you need?

27mm full frame equivalent fov at its widest.

What I'm looking for is about a zoom with 10-12mm at widest on crop sensor, or the ability to be 16mm on full frame. I want to be able to zoom out to 16mm fov crop / 24mm fov full frame.

I think autofocus might be important. My viewfinder on the D5200 is pretty terrible. I realize getting focus on a wide lens on a crop body will be fairly forgiving.

Can't seem to find that one from any local retailers. I'm in Canada so shipping over the border is a bit of a pain especially if I have any issues with copy variation.

Found these locally at these prices (new):

Tokina 16-28mm - $799.99
Tokina 17-35mm - $699.99
Nikon 18-35mm - $779.99
Nikon 10-24mm - $769.99
Sigma 10-20mm F4-F5.6 - $550

I'm thinking I might hold off for a while and wait for a better sale that is actually compelling. Best one going on is the Nikon 10-24mm @ $770, which is normally $900+ at other retailers (B&H included). I want a wide angle more than I want to move to full-frame, but I want to do both and I just can't justify the price of either (but full frame more-so).

Huh? On a wide angle lens, on a budget, and wanting to be able to fit regular filters overtop?

The only f2.8 wide angles I can think of are pretty expensive. The exception is the 16-28mm which I listed above, but it also bulbs out just like the 14-24mm Nikkor.
