Hi,

i am in search of a Solution of what I call a problem. Since i am doing lot of Pictures the last 2 years i was a bit messy on storing them. I would love to keep them on my Notebook (Running on Linux) and on my Windows PC synchronized. Somehow i also want them to be Backed-up to my NAS.

What Programms would you suggest?
Are you using a Database based structure or just stay on "files"?

Please give me a hint :)

Okay, you're speaking greek to me... you want to do what??? Save your photos somewhere in an organized fashion?

All I use is an external hard drive... keeping loads on my pc takes up a lot of memory. There's also other things that are called "google drive" there's more out there that was just an example, that you can upload your photos to and retrieve them from any computer. There's a limit on a lot of them (like 2 gb maybe) unless you pay a monthly fee or something. I do not know what an NAS is, though.

NAS = Network Attached Storage. Like Your USB-Drive but with a LAN cable

well if you just take the photos and copy them the wont provide any additional tags (metadata) like #party #birthday #drunk #granny that would be a benefit on using a program with a database. i did not use a program yet, but i want to. as it is a lot of work to tag ~ 5000 pics i don't want to do it twice :)

Ahh yes fair enough, I didn't specify much on how my files are organized lol, I like to keep it organized in the simplest way. Do your pics get transferred into files sorted out by the date? Mine are sorted out the date I've taken them. To label them all it would take me too much time and it would be harder for me to find it! They file in a folder per day... The file is usually day/month/ year. And then I make another sub folder and name it the year only "2012" for example. I do this so I don't have a bunch of folders mingling in with each other. And for previous years I can look back at a particular year easily if it's all in the same folder. Normally I don't have an issue finding them having them sorted out this way. The program that puts them into a folder with the day month year is nothing special, its called eos utility that came with my camera when I bought it (canon).

yep that is comparable to how i do it as well. but if i look for a nice picture of a tree i cant type "tree" and it pops up :( i have to search manually 4000 Pictures - or would need to type "IMG_4233.JPG" - and my brain is not that big ^^ that is why I search for a semi-professional solution

I know what you're after but I'm not sure exactly of the name of the software.

I contract for a major sporting code in Australia and they have their server setup with images tagged by photographers through metadata and we search via a web database.

You will have to tag your images via bridge or lightroom with the relevant metadata, store them, then implement a web based search facility.

Next time I'm in I will try and find out more information!

But personally I just store my photography and retouching work on local and backup hard drives like:

Year>client>job

Etc
