Boring areas are just as interesting as interesting areas if you have the right ideas.
I live in British Columbia, just by the US border in the Vancouver area. There's so many things I can shoot, but I find it more interesting when I'm out shooting in "boring" places instead. A sunset, the seawall, buildings in Vancouver, etc, have all been shot so many times that I'm not inspired to go out to the easy places to get some nice shots. Whistler will be nice to shoot when I get out there this year, though I might be going before it starts snowing which will be a drag.
I think what makes a shot interesting is the lighting (and timing), and your imagination. The scenery is somewhat secondary in a lot of ways.
