f/3.5 is just too close to f/4, so I really don't see the use
f/4 lenses are basically only there for those that cant or don't want to spend crazy cash on f/2.8 lenses
Maybe I'm just too new, but looking at a lens like the 85mm 1.8G, it seems like a good possible marketing strategy (that I hope trends) is releasing lenses just like the 85mm 1.8G. Compared to its more expensive counterpart, it is about 1/4 of the price. However, its performance is approximately equal, or by some considered even better, at f1.8 and above.
Wouldn't it make sense for possibly an f3.2 triozoom set of lenses (let's say 24-80, 80-200, and 14-24) to be released at a much cheaper price? All with VR. And at the same time, a new set of f2.2 lenses be released (let's say 12-24, 24-70, 70-200).
It seems a divide needs to be there between professional gear and consumer-level gear, or else the marketing model gets a little messed up. One would think by coming out with something like these two sets of lenses, a new market would open up... beginners who are looking for great quality at a hefty but more-affordable-than-the-current-f2.8-stuff price could go f3.2... and experts would still have that divide. For me, I'm right in the middle... I want that pro-level quality, and I'm willing to give up a little bit of the pro-level edge to get close to it, and I feel like the current offerings are black & white (except for some primes) in terms of whether you're a pro or a beginner.
Maybe I'm dreaming.
