Question #1: How many regulars are there really in here? Wouldn't it be interesting to have a couple different photo-of-the-month contests to keep things going in here?

Question #2: Why hasn't Canon or Nikon come out with an f3.5 walk-around lens that has a good size (like the 24-105L lens, 24-85 f4 Nikon lens, etc)? It seems f2.8 is great, f3.5 is decent for a shallow DoF still, and f4 is starting to get a little bit further away from that. The f2.8 offerings are big, the f4 options are relatively portable... just curious.

f/3.5 is just too close to f/4, so I really don't see the use
f/4 lenses are basically only there for those that cant or don't want to spend crazy cash on f/2.8 lenses

Maybe I'm just too new, but looking at a lens like the 85mm 1.8G, it seems like a good possible marketing strategy (that I hope trends) is releasing lenses just like the 85mm 1.8G. Compared to its more expensive counterpart, it is about 1/4 of the price. However, its performance is approximately equal, or by some considered even better, at f1.8 and above.

Wouldn't it make sense for possibly an f3.2 triozoom set of lenses (let's say 24-80, 80-200, and 14-24) to be released at a much cheaper price? All with VR. And at the same time, a new set of f2.2 lenses be released (let's say 12-24, 24-70, 70-200).

It seems a divide needs to be there between professional gear and consumer-level gear, or else the marketing model gets a little messed up. One would think by coming out with something like these two sets of lenses, a new market would open up... beginners who are looking for great quality at a hefty but more-affordable-than-the-current-f2.8-stuff price could go f3.2... and experts would still have that divide. For me, I'm right in the middle... I want that pro-level quality, and I'm willing to give up a little bit of the pro-level edge to get close to it, and I feel like the current offerings are black & white (except for some primes) in terms of whether you're a pro or a beginner.

Maybe I'm dreaming.

Huh? Nearing 3 months actually.

And no need to be a snarky asshole. Everyone begins somewhere. *cough* computer hardware section *cough*...

While there's lots to photography, it's also not a difficult hobby and/or profession to pick up (and to pick it up quickly isn't difficult either). While no one is a master immediately, I sure as hell can tell when someone is being an elitist photography asshole (you). I get it, people like to be experts in their field (or revered for their knowledge in their various hobbies), but defending yourself by going on an offensive against others is petty.

I just walk around with a 50mm f/1.4 prime. I might get an ultra wide, but 50 works fine for the most part.

If you'd like to host a contest, sure. It didn't go very well in the past, though.

I don't have time for it anymore anyways. I used to be a regular here.
