My gf picked up the Nikon 1 J3, which is a crossover between a point-and-shoot and a DSLR. It came with a 10-30mm lens. She doesn't want to carry around a lot, and doesn't want to spend much more, but I told her she should have a few different lenses for different scenarios.

I'm wondering what you would recommend for all-around shooting as a lens-set choice.

The camera she bought: http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-Digital-Camera-10-30mm-NIKKOR/dp/B00AY6MAY4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1369608016&sr=8-1&keywords=nikon+1+j3

List of supposedly compatible lenses: http://en.nikon.ca/Nikon-Products/Camera-Lenses/1-NIKKOR-Lenses/index.page#!

I figure she would want a lens for zoom-shots, but what else might she want? She has no specific interest, she just wants to get into taking nice photos, and she wants to have some slightly more advanced tools to take these photos.

She probably is willing to spend another $250, but probably $500 (give or take) over the next year I'm betting. I think for her if it makes sense, and she really wants the features, then she'll strongly consider an option.

I'll be doing more general research on how lenses work very soon, but for now I don't understand why you're recommending these lenses. I do appreciate the input nevertheless :)

The camera can't handle low light situations, loses a lot of details @ high ISO, so I'd recommend lens that can perform good at it. Some small prime lens, like a 50mm 1.8 or a 85mm 1.8 would be my first options, not wanting to spend much money. If you got a little more to spend, go for a 50mm 1.4 or a 85mm 1.4. I'd stay away from zoom lenses, as they probably won't go lower then 2.8 on a budget.
