So, I want to shoot skate videos.

I shot a couple where I was sitting still but I would like to be able to follow behind them for lines.

How does focusing work.

I focus in the beginning and stay the same distance away the whole time?

anyone have any tips for shooting videos with the canon 7D

I have the 50mm 1.8 lens and a canon 10-22 Wide angle.

I would love some help on the settings and stuff to get really good video.

you should look into a fitting "follow focus" solution for your system. it makes keeping moving objects in focus much easier and is barely expendable for something like you´re describing. just google it and find some tutorials / recommendations.

Also, I need help with the initial settings for outdoor filming of skateboarding.

Have shot a few and they came out alright but they were a little laggy(?) I guess you could say.

check your picture style and white balance settings. They are essential to adjust before filming in digital videography, because you dont have RAW files with canon video systems. That means, that you are defining the look of your video beforehand, as opposed to the post production in photography. you should get a basic knowledge of how white balance works in different situations.

in your Liveview / movie options you can select the recording size. I´d suggest 1920x1080 / 25fps.

The lag sounds weird. Might depend on your memory card. What kind of CF card do you have? For video I´d suggest a fast card like the Sandisk Extreme Pro with 90mb/s. your card needs to be able to write the information fast enough. That should take care of the videolag.
