I personally use a short hood on my 50mm lens. I haven't ever really felt like that wasn't enough. So, I'll go with the hood on the left. ;)

the larger the hood, the more flare and stray light it prevents from falling on to the lens. Simple as that. So basically, you´ll want to adapt to the situation you´re in, and to the outcome you´re going for.
